It was a beautiful day in ThunderClan. Just as it had been the day before that, and the day before that. The great golden sun shone down high above the pines and oaks, coating the camp in bright yellow sunbeams and chasing away shadows. The camp was peaceful, the lull of soft spoken voices and bustling paws a familiar and soothing symphony. One that every ThunderClan cat knew by heart. The scent of new-leaf tickled at the nose, fresh foliage and stubborn morning dew mingling to create a fresh taste in one's mouth. Adding to that the delectable scent coming from the fresh kill pile and one had the most delicious fragrance one could imagine. Stomachs never went empty in ThunderClan during any season, though that was especially true now that Falconstar had taken the reigns of leadership. With the noble Hazelclaw at his side as deputy, the team was one that surely couldn't be beaten despite how little experience they had in the positions. The only thing that could round off this amazing team would be if they had an equally amazing medicine cat to hang around Falconstar's left side. Guiding the Clan and their leadership through the will of StarClan and fighting back the dangers of illness and injury. For a time, it seemed as though Sandfeather would fit that requirement. Then Stormbird afterward... but it was not to be. The call of a queen's life whispered to Sandfeather, and her leg only gave her a suitable excuse. Stormbird followed soon after, padding calmly into the Warrior's Den with a smile on his face. That left Blueberry, the only other cat trained in medicine and Sandfeather's former mentor, to take up the mantle no matter how reluctantly. But it came with conditions: she would only remain in the position for six moons, after which she would retire again. But before she did, she would train the next medicine cat - an apprentice, only six moons of age, who would take the mantle as medicine cat as soon as they reached the end of their first year of life.
Said apprentice was currently resting atop a large rock, her tummy contented from the sparrow she'd eaten earlier and her ginger and white pelt warm beneath the sun. But sleep was hard to come by, especially when Peachpaw felt so wired! But really who could blame her for her excitement? To think that she of all the apprentices in ThunderClan would be approached with such an important role? Only two days ago had she been approached by Blueberry out of the blue, who took her to the side - away from the prying ears of her friends - and spoke with her for a little bit. Peachpaw had been confused, as Blueberry had never shown a particular interest in her before. Or any apprentices for that matter. Nevertheless, Peachpaw took the chance to chatter to her Clanmate and attempt to get to know her better. She asked a lot of funny questions, particularly about how Peachpaw thought about the warrior's life, how strong her belief was in StarClan, and above all if she'd had any sort of strange dreams. Peachpaw must've told her all the right answers or something, because after a while Blueberry finally explained why she had pulled the young she-cat aside - Stormbird was retiring from the medicine cat life, and Blueberry had been asked to step up and train the new medicine cat... and the best choice for that role was Peachpaw. ["It's not an easy life, Peachpaw. Being a medicine cat. You devote yourself to the Clan, and to StarClan for the rest of your life. I understand this is a big decision, especially because you're so young, so don't feel pressured to..." ] Blueberry hadn't even finished her sentence. There had been no need to, because Peachpaw already knew the answer. It was like a pulling on her chest, like something had clouded her mind the moment the choice was put before her and blinded her to any other life. But what life was there for her anyway? She, a cat who bored of hunting and fighting so easily, and who didn't have a desire to harm anyone? She loved her Clan, wholeheartedly and truly, and she loved StarClan. What else did she need in life?
"I accept."
With two little words, Peachpaw's life and the whole of ThunderClan had changed. The next day, with Blueberry atop the High Rock, Stormbird's retirement was announced and Blueberry explained of her return to being ThunderClan's medicine cat in his stead. But only to train the new one till they were ready, after which she would leave them the sole medicine cat of ThunderClan. The looks on everyone's faces as she called Peachpaw forward ranged from excited to surprised to proud to flabbergasted, though the last one was pointedly on only three particular faces. Namely Pearpaw, Kinkpaw, and Stoatclaw - Peachpaw's biological family, who had disowned her only one quarter moon before. Her adoptive one, on the other hand, were perhaps the most excited and surprised. No sooner had Blueberry finished the ceremony and touched her nose to Peachpaw's than did Almondpaw, Weaselpaw and Sorrelpaw tackle her to the ground in a flurry of purrs and cheers. Copperstrike stood nearby, a deep purr in his voice as he told Peachpaw of how proud he was of her, and how he knew she would be an amazing medicine cat. Out of habit, her gaze moved to seek out Stoatclaw, her father by blood, but all she caught was the tip of his tail as he made a hasty retreat out of the camp. Peachpaw couldn't help but wonder why she thought her new position would change anything between them, but in childish hope the thought had crossed her mind. So it still stung her deeply to watch him leave without a word. She moved on quick enough, racing to locate Lightpaw, her best friend and semi-protector, to babble on for the rest of the day. That night, she'd said goodnight to her family, and joined Blueberry in the Medicine Cat's Den. Her new home, for as long as she was a medicine cat. True, she still had to go to the Moonstone come the Half-Moon, but it couldn't be that bad, could it? Really, what was the worst that could happen?
...She decided to turn her thoughts to more immediate and funner things, like cloud-watching! Opening her amber gaze, the young molly rolled on her back and stared up into the yonder blue sky, where several small fluffy white clouds floated by. With a wide kitty smile, she reached up with one small paw and attempted to trace out the shapes and patterns only her mind could comprehend. With a giggle, she curled her spine slightly, brushing her back against the warm stone beneath her as she attempted to find new angles to trace at. "There's a bird there... oh, and that one looks like a leaf!" she tiled her head a little further, the white shapes reflecting in her amber gaze as they danced before their audience. "And that one looks like Chipmunktooth!" she giggled, tracing the outline of a pudgy belly with her paw for the Cloud Chipmunktooth, her tail swaying against the stone in happiness. So caught up in her daydreams, she didn't notice the cat approaching her...
